Book Sale Success!

The book sale was awesome. This year they were letting fewer people into the building at a time and it was much less chaotic. I even managed to shop the children's section... twice!

Me, Dan, Kelly, Jessica in line
See how bundled up we are?
It was only in the 50s... brrr!

The line in front of us

The line behind us

Our haul

We purchased 57 books for about $120.00... quite the bargain.

We're already looking forward to next year!

62nd Annual VNSA Used Book Sale - Tomorrow!

Well, it's that time of year again. Finally! This event is not to be missed if you're an avid reader and book collector. Over 500,000 books and ephemera is for sale at pennies on the dollar. This year the proceeds go to Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation and Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County. Any books unsold at the end of the weekend are donated to other groups, schools, or charities.
2012

The sale is held at the Arizona State Fair Grounds in one of the large exhibition buildings. People will line up starting tonight with several camping out overnight for the event. We usually arrive between 6:30-7:00 on the morning of the sale and there are people taking down their tents and trekking them to their cars at that time. The doors open at 8:00 am with a huge cheer from all of us in line.

2012

When you enter the building, no matter which direction you look, there's tables and tables stacked with books. Each table has multiple boxes underneath filled with books. It's an impressive sight.

2012

As we enter the building we split up and head to the area of interest for each of us. We usually arrange to meet up in two hours to compare finds, and then split up again for another hour or two. After three to four hours we find a spot on the floor to sort through our treasures and then head to the cashier station to pay.

Since the inventory is new each year you never know what you will find. There are always multiple copies of popular contemporary authors, tons of science fiction/fantasy books, thousands of paperbacks. The children's section is a madhouse. I've tried to go there off and on through the years, but I'm short and it's almost impossible for me to reach over the double strollers loaded with books to reach the table!

In addition to books, you can find magazines, maps, DVD's, music, puzzles, games, bookmarks, etc. I have purchased lots of cross stitch patterns and magazines there over the years.

There are shopping carts available on a limited basis, but we prefer to take our rolling suitcases and fill them up with books. We have been known to each have a full suitcase and several cloth bags filled with books on good years! My shoulders hurt for days after the book sale.

2012

On Sunday, all the inventory is half priced. We've never gone on a Sunday before, although every year we say we're going to... maybe this year we'll do it.

Check back tomorrow afternoon to see how we did!

VNSA Book Sale

On Saturday we attended the annual VNSA Book Sale here in Phoenix. It is the largest two-day book sale in the country. If you are a reader, this is book heaven. We got there around 7:20 am and got in with the first group when the doors opened at 8:00 am. The weather here is absolutely gorgeous right now and it was not cold at all waiting in line.

Dan and I both found some books we wanted. Jessica purchased quite a few books, too. I found a couple of items on JD and Janel's list, as well. I also managed to add to my stitching stash!

This is everything Dan & I purchased at the low cost of less than $65!

Stitching Update - Week 7

I'm continuing to stitch on the "Happy Holidays" project I started a few weeks ago. With luck, I think I'll have it done this coming week. I hope so, I'm rarin' to start something new!

If you read yesterday's post, you heard about the VNSA book sale that we attended. I picked up some patterns there. I feel a little guilty because I told myself I wasn't going to buy new stash this year. But, we all really knew that wasn't going to happen! I paid $1 each for these except the Mary Engelbreit was $2. Yippee!

I found a blog with instructions for making DIY counting pins. I'm hoping to make some this week and have photos next week.

Happy Stitching!

VNSA

This year the VNSA Book Sale was the sale that we almost missed. At last year's sale they handed out bookmarks with the date for the 2013 sale. The weekend before it was scheduled, Jessica informed us that they had changed the date. Thank goodness she looked at the website or we would have headed down there on the wrong day. As it was, hundreds, maybe thousands of people did go on the wrong day and they were not happy.

The sale opens at 8:00 am. When we got there at 7:15 am, we could tell there were way less people in line that in years past. We were admitted in the first wave at 8:00 am. Yippee! They had changed the layout of the sections, but I had printed out a map and studied it so I knew just where to head first.

Jessica was able to attend this year after having missed the past two years. It is so much fun to have her there. After three hours of book shopping, we headed home. Poorer in money, but richer in books! Dan and I purchased all of the items in the picture below for less than $95.00.

This sale has been held annually in Phoenix for the past 57 years. They have over 600,000 books for sale each year. It is a book lover's dream. And it's free! (Except for parking which is $7).

If you'd like more info about the sale, I have a link to their website on the left side of the page. People literally come from all around the world to attend this sale.

I can't wait til next year!

A Great Day at the VNSA!

The Book Sale was awesome as always. There were a lot more people this year than there have been in the past two years. We waited in line 2 1/2 hours before getting through the door. Guess we'll change our strategy and to back to getting there early next year!

Once inside we spent two hours shopping. We both filled our suitcases and found some great bargains. I scored a first edition "A Time to Kill" by John Grisham for $4.00!! I also found some cool cross-stitch patterns which I will share in tomorrow's stitching update.

Jessica and I might go back tomorrow for half-price day...

Part of the line when we arrived

Patiently waiting our turn

It's impossible for me to get a photo that shows how large this place is

Two hours later with our full suitcases - final total $71

VNSA Book Sale This Weekend

I have my bags ready. I have my list. I looked at the map online and I have my plan of attack laid out. Yes, it's that time of year again. Time for the VNSA Book Sale! I look forward to this event literally 365 days a year. When we leave the sale on Saturday, I will already be anticipating the next year's event.

The purpose of the VNSA Used Book Sale is to raise funds for nonprofit human service agencies. This year the funds go to Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation and Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County. Since the first book sale in 1957, VNSA has returned more than $6,000,000 to local nonprofit humans service agencies locally.

The sale is held each year on the second weekend in February at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in the Exhibit Building. There are more than 600,000 books available at this sale. That is not a typo. 600,000 books. It is a book lover's dream. You can check out a partial list of rare and unusual books being offered this year here.

If you live in the Phoenix area and are interested in attending, the hours are 8am-6pm on Saturday, 8am-4pm on Sunday. Most books are half price on Sunday. I have literally walked into this sale some years and seen copies of books that are newly published for $5. Prices begin at 60 cents and go up from there. Most newly published books cost $5-$9. The older books range from $1-$3.

For more info, watch the video. I hope to see you there!

We Scored Big at the Book Sale!

Yesterday we attended the VNSA Book Sale. We had a great time and came away with tons of new reading material. Janel and I really scored big on cross-stitch patterns. We bought more than 20 books and pattern leaflets between us. There is plenty of patterns to keep Jessica, Janel, and I busy for years! I told the girls I just hope my eyesight and fingers hold out.

They changed the way you enter the building this year. There was one monster line instead of two huge lines, and they searched your bags before you went in. We overheard one of the volunteers say that it’s because last year two people got into a fight and drew their weapons. Really?! Our first thought was “wow, what book were they fighting over?”, and our next thought was “gangbangers at the book sale? that’s kind of encouraging that they’re reading!”

We were only in line for about 75 minutes and the weather was wonderful so it wasn’t too bad. There seemed to be less books and we did hear on the news last night that there wasn’t as many books this year. The fiction area seemed very sparse to me. The children’s area was full as usual and I came away with some really cute books for Sunny to take to her house and for me to keep at mine.

Our fun weekend with JD & Janel continues today and I plan to get some photos to post. Enjoy your Sunday…

Thursday Thoughts

Oh my goodness! It is so cold here in the Valley of the Sun. Yesterday’s high was only 43 degrees which set a record for the lowest high temperature for the date and for the entire month of February. Brrr. Plus the wind blew all day long. Yesterday morning at 10:30 am, the temperature was 34 degrees, the wind chill was 21 degrees, and the dew point was –18 degrees. Yes, not only is it cold, but it is bone dry also. So, although we’re under a freeze warning, there is no chance of frost in the area because there’s no moisture in the air! Thank goodness they’re calling for 70s by next week.

I know there are lots of aspects to the situation in Egypt. There’s the political, the religious, the cultural, the financial, but I want to talk to you about the archeological aspect of the situation. It really bothers me to hear the reports of museums, pyramids, and antiquities being looted, burned, and broken into. Why would a people want to destroy their past? Especially when their past is so old and plays such an important role in the advancement of society? I just do not understand it. Once these treasures are destroyed, that’s it, there’s no replacing them. Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying this is the most important aspect of the situation over there. I’m just saying that it really struck me yesterday when they were discussing it on the news.

I am so excited about the happenings of this month. Tomorrow night Sunny will be here for her monthly sleepover. Next week, JD & Janel arrive for a visit, we attend the VNSA book sale, we’re having family photos made, and we’re having a family dinner. The following weekend, Zach’s best friend Daniel (and our “3rd son”) is getting married on Friday, Ashley’s baby shower is Saturday, and Katie’s hosting a candle party on Sunday. (If you want any Gold Canyon candles, let me know). On Monday, 2/28, I’m having lunch with Daniel’s mom and grandma. Then on Friday, 3/4 my new granddaughter is due! 2011 is shaping up to be quite the year for our family.

VNSA Book Sale

Yippee! It’s that time of year again… time for the VNSA Book Sale in Phoenix. This year it is being held Saturday, February 12th 8 am – 6 pm, and Sunday, February 13th 8 am – 4 pm. All books are half price on Sunday (except rare & unusual books). It takes place at the Exhibit Building at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix. There are more than 600,000 books and other items for sale. It is a book lover’s dream come true!

The proceeds from the sale are used to support two nonprofit human service agencies: Arizona friends of Foster Children Foundation, and Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County.

Last year Jessica was living in Ohio and flew in for the sale. This year JD & Janel, who live in South Carolina, are flying in for the sale. I’ve started making my list and planning my strategy. They post a map on the website each year showing the layout of the sales floor. I’m checking everyday to see if this year’s map is up yet so I can plot my way through the sale.

2010 The line when we arrived

In previous years, we’ve gotten there about a half hour after the doors open and generally stood in line about 60 – 90 minutes. Last year, we got there 30 minutes before the doors opened, stood in line 45 minutes, and entered the building in the 2nd wave. Needless to say, we’re going to try to repeat that experience this year. We take our own cloth bags and rolling suitcases to put our books in. They do hand out plastic bags at the door, but they are small and your hands will be numb in no time from carrying them.

Once we enter the building, we split up to shop our individual lists. We meet up in an hour, compare notes, and then split again for another hour. When we join up the 2nd time, those who have completed their shopping help those who still are looking for items. We’re generally in the building 3 – 4 hours. At the end, we find a corner to sit on the floor, sort through our stash one last time and then make our way to the cashiers.

If you’re not a reader, you’re thinking we’re nuts. If you are a reader, you can understand what a great adventure this is! Check out the website for additional information. Leave me a comment if you plan to attend and I’ll keep an eye out for you!

I Can't Wait...

One month from now JD & Janel will be here. I am so excited! I haven’t seen them since Christmas 2009 and I miss them dreadfully. In the meantime, I plan to store up enough memories with them during this visit to hold on to until the next time I’m with them.

We already have a jam-packed weekend planned. They will arrive on Friday around lunch time. We’re going to pick them up at Sky Harbor Airport and then drive down to Mesa for lunch and a visit to Attic Needlework to check out the latest in cross-stitch patterns and supplies. Janel is a cross-stitcher, as is Jessica. I just love that the three of us have that in common.

On Saturday morning, we get to the real purpose of their visit. The VNSA Book Sale. Oh my goodness. If you’re a reader, you have to attend this sale. There are over 600,000 books for sale, along with games, magazines, DVDs, CDs, maps, and more! If you have kids, you need to attend this sale. The children’s area is awesome. Of course it helps if you have long arms and good eyesight so you can reach over the three people in front of you to sort through the books on the table! But, more about the book sale in another post. Back to JD & Janel. After several hours at the sale, we’ll come home to gloat over our purchases and relax. JD & Janel are going out Saturday night for their Valentine’s celebration since they’ll be flying on Valentine’s Day.

Sunday afternoon, my entire little family will pose for family portraits. After that, we’re joining with the rest of our extended family for pizza and wings at Katie’s house. I’m sure I’ll bore you to tears with way too many pictures on my blog of their visit.

What can I say? I’m a proud mom…

Oh, the Fun We Had!

The VNSA Book Sale yesterday was terrific! We all came away with items that were on our list and a few that weren't. Of course, as every year, there were disappointments too. But, we always look on the bright side, whatever we didn't find this year, we might find next year.

South Line above, North Line below

We found an arrival strategy that really worked and we're going to try to implement it each year from here out. We got there at 7:45, 15 minutes before the doors opened. The lines were tremendous. There are two lines on each side of the building filtering in to a single entrance door. We were worried that we would be in line for hours. But, when the doors opened at 8:00, they let so many people in at once, that we knew we'd get in on the second wave. I figured we had 30 minutes to go until the next opening, but, again we were surprised. We only waited 10 minutes before they let us in. So, we were in the doors by 8:10 am. Wow! We waited less than when we get there after they've opened.

I am somewhere in this line.

Once inside we separated, agreeing to meet up in one hour to regroup. As expected, the children's area was a madhouse. I'm so short that it's almost impossible for me to see over and under the people crowding the tables and floor. That's where Dan & Jessica came in, they attacked the kid's books and found lots of great buys! Dan found the cutest opposites book for our granddaughter, illustrated by pictures of NFL players. Gabe's a huge football fan, so Katie bought that one off of me. I found one of the "Little House" hardbacks that I needed, but I think next year I'll have to hit the kids books first to find any others. I found Lemony Snicket books, which Kyler reads, and was able to buy him 4 volumes for the same amount that I spent on one volume at Christmas w/a coupon. Yippee!

The thing about this sale is that it's different every year. Usually there are 4-6 boxes of xstitch magazines & patterns. This year there was 1 1/2 boxes and only 1 magazine. Bummer. The Christmas book selection was small too, but I was able to score three new books, including a book of Christmas classics illustrated by Mary Engelbreit, brand-new, for $4.

Finally, 3 1/2 hours later, we staggered to the car under the load of 2 rolling suitcases, and 4 bags of books. We all went over budget, but it was (and will be) worth it.

Here we are with our stash.

Next year's sale is 2/12-13, mark your calendars and I'll see you there!

Tomorrow's the Big Day

Tomorrow we're off to the VNSA Book Sale. I am so excited. I have my list made, I looked at the map of the building and planned my shopping strategy. I have my purse emptied of everything; ready to hold my sunglasses, water bottle, baggy of grapes, cell phone, debit card, and list. My rolling suitcase is ready and I have 10 cloth bags laid out. I am so excited!

Jessica brought a small pocket size camera with her, so she's going to bring it so we can take pictures to post tomorrow afternoon. People come from all over the country to go to this sale. For book lovers, Phoenix Arizona is the place to be the second weekend of February!

Books... as Far as the Eye Can See!

We have a great annual book sale here in Phoenix. It's the VNSA sale and it's held each year at the Exhibit Building at the Arizona State Fairgrounds. There are more than 600,000 books, yes, you read it right - 600,000.

The purpose of the VNSA Used Book Sale is to raise funds for three nonprofit human service agencies; Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation, Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County, and Toby House.

This year the sale is being held on February 13/14, the hours are 8 am - 6 pm on Saturday, and 8 am -4 pm on Sunday. On Sunday all books are half price.

If you love books, you have to go to this sale. The prices are unbelievable. They have books from every category imaginable. It is very well organized, but be warned, there are tons and tons of people. This is the kind of thing that people line up for all night. (I think most of them are Science Fiction readers for some reason).

We usually get there around 8:30 - 9:00 on Saturday. We generally have to wait in line an hour to an hour and a half. Once inside, we split up and start shopping. We usually shop for an hour, meet up, sort through the books, and then split up again. We usually shop for 2-3 hours.

This year will be especially challenging because we're going to make a foray into the children's books. I'm determined to have a variety of books in my grandchildren library at my house. Plus, Katie wants me to buy some books for the baby to have at their house.

Jessica is flying in for the sale and we have a new strategy for this year. I'm going to combine our lists, type them up, and make copies for all three of us. That way, if we see something the other one wants, we can grab it up and then deal with it when we meet to sort.

We take our own reusable bags, they pass out plastic bags, but they don't hold enough books. This year, we're also taking our carry-on luggage. People zip them open and bungee the flap back and that way they can fill it with books and wheel it around. I figure we can also hang some of our filled bags off of them. I have "old shoulders" and they're starting to rebel at carrying 4-5 bags filled with hardbacks for 3 hours!

There are hardbacks, paperbacks, magazines, games, videos, dvds, cds, sets of books, maps, antique books, out of print books... literally anything related to reading is available at this sale.

They take cash, credit, or debit. They have a holding area where you can park your books for an hour if they get too heavy for you to carry around. There is a limited number of shopping carts, but you have to put your name in for them. It could be hours before you get one, so we don't bother.

I am so excited! Every year I find an unexpected treasure, as well as many of the books on my list. If you're a reader, you need to check this sale out; one visit and you'll be hooked! For more information and list of the categories available check out the website http://vnsabooksale.org/
