Back to School!

Four of the grands are back to school earlier this month. One third grader, two first graders, and a pre-schooler. I have three school calendars to transfer to my calendar and am keeping my fingers crossed that there is no conflicts of more than one activity on the same day at different schools. I can see that the days of Dan and I having to possibly split school functions is fast approaching!

And as if that weren't exciting enough, my surrogate grandchild, Kyler, moved into ASU this weekend. We are so proud of him!!

All Grown Up

My "first" grandchild graduated from high school yesterday. Kyler became my surrogate grandchild in 1998. His mom, Marti and I worked together. I'll never forget the first time I met him. He was just a few days old and when she handed him to me he cuddled in as if he'd known me forever. I was in love.

Over the years Kyler spent lots of time at our house. He accompanied us to band concerts, dance concerts, high school plays and sports events. We accompanied him to soccer games, Kindergarten graduation, church programs and football games.

As he grew older we spent less one on one time with him, but we kept up with his accomplishments, challenges, and opportunities.

He has made us proud.

I wasn't prepared for how deeply emotional I was at his graduation. My "first" grandbaby. All grown up. Ready to take on the world. Kyler has grown into a caring, confident young man. He has a smile that will light up a room.

Kyler, as you head off to college remember we are here for you. You can hit us up for a loan. Call when you need to vent. Text any time you wish. For sure keep us updated with your successes. Being the "first", you made me into the Grammy I am today. I give you all the credit. I was able to look ahead through your childhood and form a picture of what I wanted to be when the rest of the grandkids came along. I am looking forward to our relationship transforming from adult to child into adult to adult, to hearing your folks brag to me about your college experiences, to seeing what you do in your future.

Thank you, Kyler, for being my "first".

And thank you Marti and Adam, for letting us share this incredible child with you!

Wrapping Up 2012

Before I begin this post I'd like to ask for prayer for my granddaughter Sunny. She was diagnosed with pneumonia yesterday. Poor little thing... she looks absolutely miserable. I know she's sick because all she does is lay on the couch or in bed. Hopefully Thunder won't get it too. Thank you for your prayers!

The last week of 2012 was a flurry of activity and I didn't post some final photos, so here they are:

Kyler is our surrogate grandson. He turned 14 this year. His birthday is a few days before Christmas so I delivered his birthday and Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve. I can't believe he's 14!!

I need some new wreaths and Jessica came over the day after Christmas and made this wreath for me. Isn't it beautiful?! I'm hoping she can make a couple more next year.

The kids stayed with us a few days/nights while Katie and Gabe went to California to celebrate Gabe's 30th birthday. Of course Buster came to spend the time too. As you can see, everyone likes to sit on Gramps' lap!

Rehearsal

Yesterday we held the rehearsal for the wedding. Sunny is so overwhelmed with excitement that she can hardly be contained. Normally that is a cute thing. But for a wedding... On the third try she did a great job of taking the petals from her little basket and dropping them on the ground. Of course, she was also saying out loud "grab and drop... grab and drop". Very cute!

After the rehearsal we adjourned to Katie and Gabe's for pizza and wings... and basketball (for some of them).

Enjoy the pictures!

So Far This Week...

It's only Wednesday, but we've already had loads of fun at Grammy's house. Since our family Christmas on Saturday, Sunny is very wound up and knows that there are more presents for her to open on Christmas Day. She totally grasped the concept of opening gifts this year! She and Thunder were here on Monday and Tuesday. Here are some photos of the fun we've been having...

She loves this little train set from IKEA

Such a happy boy!

This is what happens when you stand at the door and swing the blinds...
Me: Did you learn a lesson?
Sunny: Yes.
Me: What did you learn?
Sunny: I don't know...

We got to see him last night to give him his Birthday and Christmas gifts.
Isn't he a handsome young man?!

8 Months Old/Another Concert

Here is my official Eight Month Photo with my granddaughter.
We took it at a concert that Kyler had last night.

We sat close enough this time that we could
actually hear Kyler's instrument, it was so cool!

I wanted a back-to-back shot with Kyler
to show that he's almost as tall as me.

A very proud Grammy with the kids.

We took Kyler to a concert at this very school when
he was still a baby. Katie was babysitting him that night
& Jessica or JD had a band concert. Talk about the circle
of life! Where did the years go?

Our 'Grandson'

We have been blessed the past (almost) 11 years with a surrogate grandson, Kyler. When he was born, his mom, Marti, and I were co-workers as well as friends. He started coming to our house for babysitting when he was an infant. All of our kids have babysat him at one time or another. But, the relationship goes far beyond babysitting.

Kyler quickly became adopted into our family due to the generosity of his parents. They would let him spend the night at our house, go with us on errands, to look at Christmas lights, to watch the kids' activities, to bake and decorate cookies, and of course, to eat Animal Pancakes at our house for breakfast.
As he grows, we get to attend his events: Kindergarten graduation, school programs, sports, church programs, and now, band concerts. It has been such a joy to watch him mature. He is a nice kid, smart, and athletic. I may be biased, but in my humble opinion, Kyler has it all! One of my proudest moments was to watch his baptism this past summer.

Now that we've added our granddaughter to the mix, I enjoy watching him interact with her. As he's nearing the end of his elementary years, I'm looking forward to Jr. High and High School. I can't wait to see what activities he joins, and how he chooses to use his talents and abilities.

Thank you, Marti and Adam, for sharing your terrific son with us!
