365 of Three Hundred Sixty Five

When I was thinking about this post, I was in my normal analytical frame of mind. I was going to post about what worked and what didn't in 2018. But to tell you the truth, 2018 was such an unusual year for us, that I've decided not to focus on what didn't work. I'm ready to look to 2019 and the possibilities, opportunities and challenges it holds.

I did come to the conclusion that the size of my family has outgrown my normal organizing, planning, and executing skills and I need to change my ways. So I've been putting lots of thought into how to upgrade my skill set to enjoy my little family that will number 16 in the new year as well as my extended family which brings the total to 23.

I'm excited to get control (hahahaha) of my stitching projects and actually complete some on time (hahahahaha). I'm also determined to take control of the entire crafting situation at my house. (yeah, right)

So with the chaos of 2018 in the rear window, I'm leaning forward in eager anticipation of 2019.

Happy New Year!

Another great vintage New Years postcard. I like to frame pieces like this in thrift store frames & scatter them around in bookcases & such. It adds a lot of interest & gives guests more to talk about.

One Word

Word of the Year Ideas - One Little Word - Happiness is Homemade

I don't know what I was doing the other day, probably half listening to some story on the news, when out of the blue my One Word for 2019 blasted into my brain. I usually spend a few weeks thinking/praying about my one word, but I hadn't even given it a thought yet. So, without further fanfare, here's my One Word:

res·o·lute
/ˈrezəˌl(y)o͞ot/
adjective
  1. admirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering.
    "she was resolute and unswerving"
    synonyms:determined, purposeful, resolved, adamant,
    single-minded, firm, unswerving, unwavering,
    steadfast, staunch, stalwart, unfaltering, unhesitating,
    persistent, indefatigable, tenacious, strong-willed,
    unshakable;

Now I wish I could give you some inspiring example of how this word will impact my life in the new year. I wish I could explain with enthusiasm why this word occurred to me. But I can't. All I can say is that I'm going to embrace this word and all that it implies and see where it takes me.

In that I am resolute.

Wise men following the star to see the new born king. #biblejournaling #threewisemen #jesusisborn

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star at its rising and have come to worship him."

When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. So he assembled all the chief priest and scribes of the people and asked them where the Christ would be born. "In Bethlehem of Judea," the told him, "because this is what was written by the prophet:
And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah:
Because out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel."

Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men and asked them the exact time the star appeared. He sen them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the child. When you find him, report back to me so that I too can go and worship him." After hearing the king, they went on their way. And there it was-the star they had seen at its rising. It led them until it came and stopped above the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overwhelmed with joy. Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and falling to their knees, they worshiped him.

Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their own country by another route.

Anneliese shared this verse in a blog post last week. It was so beautiful and touched my heart so I thought I'd share it here. Thanks Anneliese!

Isn’t is awesome when you read something in the Bible and it is like God is talking straight to you! He knows what you are going through, what is on your mind and what you have been worrying about. I believe that He does use His word to reach out to us – to love and comfort us. Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. - Isaiah 46:4

Silence

If you were to know me in "real life" you would know that I am a talker. I can talk to anybody at any time at any place on any subject for an extended period of time. I talk to strangers, friends, family, pets, stranger pets. Get the picture?

For the past five or six years I've been challenged two or three times a year from laryngitis. It occurs when I have a cold. I get a sore throat for 24 hours or less and then suffer from laryngitis for three to four weeks after. Zero voice for two weeks and then strengthening voice for one to two more weeks. It is a challenge, no a real struggle to be quiet. I usually just plow ahead and talk until I can't even squeak.

I'm beginning to think that may have been a bad plan.

In August I got Strep Throat. I think it's the first time in my life that I've had it, certainly I don't remember ever having it. My tongue/throat felt "funny", but I just assumed it was a normal part of Strep. After ten days of Amoxicillin, I caught a cold. Sure enough regular sore throat followed by three weeks of laryngitis. But my tongue/throat still felt funny. Clinic visit - thrush - ten days of Nystatin. Still driving me nuts. Six days of steroid treatment. No relief.

I finally went back to the Dr yesterday with a printed diagram of the tongue/throat area. I marked the places on it that I think I feel "something". She said well, maybe it's nodules on your vocal cords. You do still sound a little hoarse. Yes, I said, and I can't sing. Yep, she said, probably your vocal cords.

So now I'm off to the ENT in November (earliest available appt). In the meantime, I can't even attempt to sing, no yelling, and talk as little as possible.

As with most things in life, it takes a hammer to really get my attention and my voice now has my attention. I get hoarse if I talk too long, so I'm really trying to stay quiet.

As we head into Thanksgiving.

And Christmas.

If you think of it, please pray that I'll shut my mouth AND that I won't have to have surgery.

Oh, and don't call me... 😉

Update: The Year of the Purge

You may recall that my motto for this year is "the year of the purge". As with most things, I started out doing great with purging my things, but as Spring continued into Summer I lost momentum.

In order to motivate myself I decided to keep track of the number of items I purged in July. It was motivating! I purged 104 items in July, Woohoo!

Now before I pat myself on the back too much, let's have a reality check. It seems like a large number, but it's not a lot of stuff. I still have plenty. And I'm sure plenty of what I have could stand to leave my house.

I did come up with a good method to use in purging decor items; I take a picture of it and text it to the females in my family. Whoever responds first wanting it, gets it. If no one wants it, into the Goodwill box it goes.

My niece was the "winner" for this item

The hardest thing for me to purge is craft items. Particularly my cross stitch patterns. The cold reality is that I really do have more patterns than I'll live to stitch. I accept that. What's difficult is choosing which patterns I want to spend my time stitching. Ugh. Fortunately, Jessica and Janel are both stitchers, so I'm in the habit of going through my patterns about three times a year and then giving them the opportunity to take the ones I don't want. The problem has been that in years past, I take back the ones they don't want. Hmm, you can see how that's not a good thing! This year, when I gave them the patterns to go through, I told them to take the ones they don't want to Goodwill or pass on to someone else. That way they don't come back into my house.

Purging, decluttering, organizing, whatever you call it, it can be a challenge. However, the reward is that your house will feel lighter, your mind will feel clearer, and you CAN buy new stuff without feeling guilty! haha

Farmer Boy

JD sent me this photo of Blizzard "picking green beans" in their garden. From the amount of dirt on him, I'd say he was an enthusiastic picker!

I love the one shoe off, one shoe on pose. And the amount of dirt on his hard-working tractor!

Today's verse is special to me. It's my life verse. This is the verse I think of when life feels overwhelming, chaotic, sad, confusing, or out-of-control. It's a reminder that God does not intend for me to live in a state of panic or overwhelming despair. He intends for me to live in a state of peace that only comes through a relationship with Him. Needless to say, being the anxious person that I am, this verse is brought to my mind countless times!

Sixty-Two

Today is my 62nd Birthday. I love my birthday. I don't mind growing older and am not shy about sharing my age. I figure I've worked and lived hard to attain these milestones and I love to celebrate them.

Besides, I don't feel 62. I've been stuck at feeling around 35 for several years now. Being around the grandkids and doing so much with them no doubt helps to keep us "young".

I am so blessed!

On the Road Again...

Last week we drove to the Kansas City area to meet JD, Janel, and Blizzard. We had a great time! The weather was awesome and we managed to fill every minute making great memories.

When we arrived on Thursday morning, we headed over to Independence, MO to the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum. Since I grew up in the KC area, I had been to this library many times. As a matter of fact, one of the most significant events of my life happened on 12/27/72 when my neighbor took me over to the Library to stand in line to pass by President Truman's casket lying in repose in the Library lobby. The Truman Library is the first Presidential library built. It is small, but filled with interactive displays, and exhibits that highlight all phases of President Truman's life.

After the Library, we headed over to Overland Park, KS for lunch with my childhood best friend. When I lived in OP, until 1979, it's boundary was 111th St. or College Blvd. It has grown way beyond that boundary now! We had lunch at Stroud's on 135th St. What?!! And that's not the southern boundary, it goes on beyond there.

Lunch with Carla was so much fun! We met in 6th grade, became fast friends and stayed friends into young adulthood. When I moved to AZ we lost touch. In 2009 I started searching for her on the Internet and found her through LinkedIn. We started up right where we left off. We've seen her in person three times over the past nine years, and keep up with each other through emails, texts, and Instagram. After lunch, Dan said "I love to hear you girls talk, it's as if there was never a break in your friendship!". I agree!!

That evening we briefly met up with Janel's parents at our hotel. Since we were all together we, of course, had to get a photo taken with Blizzard!

On Friday morning Janel was still busy with her conference, so JD, Blizzard, Dan, and I visited my SIL's mom, Priscilla in OP. We stopped at a train shop so Dan could check out items for his new hobby - a "N" Scale Model Train set-up. We then headed over to Antioch Park. I have so many great childhood memories of Antioch Park. We had family picnics there. Church picnics there. School picnics there. It was a great park for kids, with a child sized Western Town that we could play in and climb on. I was thrilled to see that "Dodgetown" still existed when we got there. Of course, it's been updated a few times in the past 39 years! Blizzard had a great time trying out the play equipment. I had a great time revisiting the buildings from my youth.

Friday afternoon we headed out to the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Remember how shocked I was the OP extended to 135th St? The Arboretum is located on 179th Street. It blows my mind to see the growth in that town. The Arboretum was beautiful. It consists of several trails you can walk featuring specific themes. I love hydrangeas (of course, we can't grow them here in the desert) and was amazed by the huge hydrangea plants in the garden.

Saturday morning was the highlight of our trip with a visit to the West Bottoms warehouse district for antique shopping. I came home with a few treasures, but Janel hit the jackpot with a beautiful hutch that will be just perfect in their home. Good thing she borrowed her parent's pick-up truck so she could get it back to Manhattan! That night we drove to The Country Club Plaza for dinner at a great Mexican Restaurant and then drove Ward Parkway to gawk at the huge mansions built along it.

Blizzard was such a delight! He warmed up to us right away and enjoyed walking with us holding our hands. He's becoming very verbal and is at the stage where he thoroughly understands the power of saying "no". He has the cheeriest smile and the most robust laugh. We love him so and treasure every moment we get to spend with him.

It's always hard to leave them, but this time was made a little easier with the knowledge that they're flying out here on September 29th for a conference JD is speaking at. While he and Janel stay at the hotel downtown, Blizzard is going to come and stay with us. We can't wait!!

Official Seven Year Photo

Thunder is seven years old! I don't know where the time has gone, but this sweet baby is growing into a sweet boy. He is so loving, compassionate, empathetic and lively, funny, athletic and smart, thoughtful, did I mention loving?

He chose to have a swim party at our house and then the next day we celebrated with lunch at the Rain Forest Cafe and a trip to the Legoland Discovery Center.

He is totally into Pokemon cards right now and had a Pokemon themed birthday party. I would guess that 75% of the gifts he received were Pokemon related! He also likes cars, Legos, dinosaurs... all of the usual boy stuff.

Happy Birthday, Thunder! You bring so much joy to Gramps and me💜

Christmas in July!

Yippee! It's finally here, Christmas in July!

Now, I know many of you groan when you see the Christmas merchandise appear in June at the craft stores. That's why I don't write CIJ posts for this blog... I don't want to lose readers! But for the rest of you, the people like me that rejoice when the Christmas items show up in the summer, I have a Christmas blog. This year's theme is The ABCs of Christmas. Come on over for a visit and a shot of Christmas cheer!

Update to Thank You...

Thank you, Gracie! And Jo! I knew I had read something about comments awhile back on someone's blog, but couldn't remember who, when, or if it was about this subject. It was Jo, and yes it contained a fix. I've now applied the fix to both of my blogs and we'll see if it really worked.

Woo-hoo! I've really missed you guys! Glad we're back in touch.

Thank you...

I had been wondering why I was not getting any comments on my blog posts, but I just assumed it was because they just weren't being commented on! haha I usually get an email notification when someone comments and haven't received any in weeks. So this weekend I decided to investigate and discovered that it's a problem with Blogger and not necessarily due to my boring posts. And when I looked back at my posts I saw that I've been comments all along.

So... Thank you to everyone who has posted a comment lately on my blog! I will pay better attention now that I know there's a problem. You guys are the greatest and I don't want to ignore you!

Sometimes I think "I should start blogging." But then I think "What would I even do with a blog? I don't know the first thing about blogging." And don't you have to be interesting to blog? I would write about nannying and going to the dollar store on a weekly basis because it literally blows by mind that EVERYTHING there is a dollar

Grammy's Summer Camp

Well, I HAD intentions to post regularly about Grammy's Summer Camp this year, but it's been a whirlwind of activity and I'm just now getting around to it.

We are halfway through this year's camp and we've had such fun! It's been a little chaotic in that I never know on any given day just how many grands will be attending, but that just adds to the excitement.

My schedule is to have Sunny and Thunder on T-W-Th. Skye drops in as needed. Storm and Snow are here on T-W for the Bible Study I host that Jessica attends and for Movie Day.

This year our overall theme is "Down on the Farm". My DIL Janel and her mom have graciously supplied us with activities related to farming. Our daily schedule includes Time with God, chores, reading time, worksheets, board games, art, science, cooking, Brain Quest, Flash Cards, and of course, swimming.

I made a reading bingo chart for each of them and a chore chart. They also have a daily reading chart to record the minutes read on. At the end of each week they get to choose from the treasure chest if they've completed their reading minutes. They will get money for their piggy banks at the end of the summer for the chores they've completed.

As a side note I just want to say that they're old enough now to do some chores that are really helpful! I told my daughters that having them do chores three days a week is almost like having a maid, hahaha!

Here's a glimpse into our camp so far...

Storm and Snow playing Candyland and
goofing off the first week of summer camp

At the movies: Storm, Thunder, Snow, Sunny, Skye
Lunch, then worksheets while the littles napped.

Tio Zach dropped in one day and had fun with Snow

Thunder completing one of the Reading Bingo options - reading in the bathtub

A field trip to Barnes and Noble, learning about Job at Bible Study,
completing a "Down on the Farm" activity sheet

Playing after the Wednesday morning movie
