Stitching Update - Week 21

We spent Memorial Day weekend visiting JD and Janel. We had a blast and it was a different kind of a trip than we normally take. For one thing, Jessica went with us. For another, this trip had a specific purpose: to visit three cross-stitch shops in Oklahoma and Kansas. We drove to Tulsa and met JD and Janel who had driven down from Manhattan Kansas.

Our first stop was The Silver Needle in Tulsa. I meant to take a picture of us girls there, but to tell you the truth once I walked into the shop it totally flew out of my mind. OH. MY. GOSH. If you haven't been there, you need to go. It was completely overwhelming. The walls and virtually every inch of flat surface are filled with cross-stitch samples. They are beautiful and overwhelming. I have never been in a shop with so much inventory. Did I mention yet that I was completely overwhelmed? I finally stopped spinning around in circles and picked a place to start shopping. It was tough to do. Your eye is constantly moving to another beautiful sample either hanging above you or on a surface in front of you.

The presentation of the inventory is very nice. The sales associates are extremely friendly and ready to help you find what you're looking for. They have a nice selection of fabrics. If you use the restroom, the samples displayed in there are for sale. I did come away with a couple of patterns and some buttons. It was Janel's 2nd or 3rd trip there and she had a good plan for navigating the store. Jessica and I were at a loss. I would like to go back there now that I've seen it and know what to expect.

Our second stop in OK was the Stitchworks shop directly across the street from The Silver Needle. I have to be honest and say that I was very disappointed. They had tons of patterns, but they were not organized in an user-friendly way. Also, the sales associate greeted us when we came in, but ignored us the rest of the time. When I did ask her a question, I got the impression that she did not appreciate me interrupting her conversation with the other sales associate. None of us bought anything and I probably would not visit the store again.

After leaving Tulsa, we drove up to Manhattan where JD and Janel live. We made a few non-stitch related stops along the way which I will post about in the coming days.

On Tuesday morning, we loaded up the car to come home to Surprise, but we had a very important stop to make first. Picture This Plus in Abilene, KS. We spent over an hour there and it seemed as though it was just a few minutes. If you're not familiar with PTP you're missing out. They hand dye their fabrics and they are gorgeous!! I have to give a huge THANK YOU to Marilyn. I had called her a while back to find out what hours they're open and to tell her that my daughter and I were making a special trip out there to visit the shop along with my DIL. When I told her it would be on the day we were heading back home she offered to come in and open the shop early for us. Sure enough, she let us in at 9 am which gave us time to shop before hitting the road back to Phoenix. Now that's, some good customer service!

Marilyn also helped us choose fabrics for the patterns we had kitted up and brought with us. We all bought some fabric and I'm already planning what patterns to kit up to take with me next time I go. Thank you, Marilyn!

I have to admit that I'm lagging a bit in my memory work. But instead of beating myself up, I'm trying to apply myself more. I'm not giving up for sure!

Psalm 86:5 (NIV)

You, Lord, are forgiving and good,
abounding in love to all who call to you.

As I Get Older...

I was fitted with my first pair of prescription glasses when I was eight years old. Since then I grew steadily more nearsighted (myopia) each year. When I hit my 30s, I used to look forward to my 40s, thinking that when I started to get farsighted (presbyopia) the two would cancel each other out and I would miraculously be able to see! Yeah, that didn't happen. Instead I had to have bi-focals.

Now that I'm approaching 57, my vision has gotten much more complicated. The good news is that my prescription for nearsightedness is actually improving a little. The farsightedness is not. Neither of those prescriptions work for stitching (mid range vision) or the computer. So I now have four pairs of glasses. I just got new ones, so I thought I'd show them off.

The bottom line is: I'm thankful for my eyesight!

My computer glasses
They're single vision so I was able to buy plastic frames, I love them!

My stitching glasses
They're single vision so I was able to buy small, lightweight frames

My sunglasses (obviously)
They're bifocal progressives
My lenses are so thick that they're not able to grind them down
If you were to see me in person, you'd see that these are truly coke bottle lenses

My everyday glasses
They're bifocal progressives, but in a clear lens they are able to grind them down quite a bit.
Thank goodness!

Grandkids

On Saturday we drove down to Mesa to celebrate Ashley's 23rd Birthday. It was such fun to visit with Zach, Ashley, and Skye,,, and of course we took pictures! Then yesterday my folks came over for a play date. You guessed it, more pictures!

I just love this photo of Skye

What a happy face

Of course Grammy always has to steal a kiss

Papa (my dad) playing with Thunder

Sunny serving Gigi (my mom) dinner at her "restaurant"

What a sweet photo

Thunder dropped in for a bite too - more interested in the fake food than in smiling for the camera!

Here is the verse I've chosen to memorize:

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Colossians 3:12 NIV

Not only will I be working to memorize this verse, I'll be working to live it!
