Thursday Thoughts

My son-in-law Adam works part-time at Starbucks. He gets a free package of coffee or tin of tea each month. We dropped in to visit him last night and I bought a cup of Tazo Awake Tea. It was really good and Jessica told him I'd like a tin of it some month. He hadn't gotten his free product for September yet, so I came home with a tin of tea! Thank you Adam...

Weather: Can I just say it's hot here? Today's high is supposed to be 107, which would tie the record high. There is cooler weather on the horizon... the forecast shows that it might dip down to the 90s next week. All of the weather guys on TV keep saying "get your jackets out" ha ha

Sunny: As promised I have a picture and video of Sunny to post this week. She likes to push the rocking chair (it was Dan's when he was little, I also have the one that was my Dad's when he was a kid) all over the tile in the house. She also pushes the ottoman from my sectional around. I saw in the Big Lots ad last night that they have a grocery cart for $10 so I went and bought one. Hopefully she'll enjoy pushing it as much as the rocking chair!

Friends: Today I'm meeting my friend Kim for coffee and my friend Marti for lunch, yippee! It's been ages since Kim and I got together. She's expecting a new granddaughter so we have tons to catch up on. Marti and I talk all the time, but see each other rarely. What a treat today is!

Using My Gifts

Today's Daily Verse comes courtesy of Laura over at Decor To Adore. If you haven't seen her blog check it out. It's like a mini-vacation every day that she posts. Her images are calm, serene, peaceful and beautiful. Seriously, when I see that she has updated I grab a cup of hot tea and take a mental health break.

Anyway, when I read 1 Peter 4:10 "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.", I knew it had to be the verse for today.

It is so easy to look at others and see their gifts. Sometimes it's difficult for me to recognize my gifts. Don't get me wrong. I know I have gifts, it's just that sometimes I can't help but compare my paltry gifts with others' over-the-top gifts and feel inadequate. Gee, I wonder what God thinks about that? Can you just imagine Him thinking how ungrateful I am?! The truth is that we have all been endowed with unique gifts. God gives us the gifts and then He expects us to use them faithfully. As the verse above states, we're to use them to "administer God's grace in its various forms."

What could be easier? I mean really. I have tons of examples of God's grace in its various forms that I can share. I don't even have to think hard to come up with a dozen examples of God's grace. This verse is just another conviction of how I make my walk with Christ so complicated. It's so easy to have an excuse for my inadequacies, my fears, my procrastination. I can make endless excuses that keep me from situations that might be uncomfortable or intimidating when it comes to sharing God's grace with others.

It's not complicated. All I have to do is be willing to use my gift of 'being able to talk to any person on any subject at length' (yes, that is a gift, just go to the grocery store with me once, you'll see it in action) to share my experiences of God's grace.

Don't you just love all the ways God uses to get our attention; even a blog...

Just What I Needed

This morning I got out of bed all out of sorts. I didn't feel well physically. It seemed like the weight of all my worries hit me as soon as my feet hit the floor. I felt behind already and I hadn't even gotten dressed. I was agitated and frustrated.

When I signed on to update my blog I saw that A Baby Changes Everything had updated and clicked over to read her post. From there I found this blog. It was a God-thing. I know everybody gets these kind of emails all the time. I rarely stop to read them. Most of them have been around for a decade and I've received them multiple times. But for whatever reason this one was just what I needed this morning. So, I'm sharing it:

  • Pray
  • Go to bed on time
  • Get up on time so you can start the day un-rushed
  • Say "No" to projects that won't fit into your time schedule or that will compromise your mental health
  • Delegate tasks to capable others
  • Simplify and declutter your life
  • Less is more, although one is often not enough and two are often too many
  • Allow extra time to do things and get places
  • Pace yourself; spread out big changes and difficult projects over time. Don't lump the hard things all together
  • Take life one day at a time
  • Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can't do anything about a situation, forget about it
  • Live within your budget. Don't use credit cards for ordinary purchases
  • Have backups - an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc.
  • K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut) This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble
  • Do something for the "kid in you" everyday
  • Get organized so everything has its place
  • Carry a Bible with you to read while waiting in line
  • Get enough rest
  • Eat right
  • Make friends with Godly people
  • Listen to a tape while driving that will help improve the quality of your life
  • Write down thoughts and inspirations
  • Every day, find time to be alone
  • Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don't wait until it is time to go to bed to try and pray
  • Keep a folder or post it notes of your favorite scripture on hand
  • Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good "Thank You Jesus"
  • Take your work seriously - but not yourself at all
  • Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can)
  • Laugh, and then laugh some more!
  • Be kind to unkind people (they probably need it most)
  • Sit on your ego
  • Talk less and listen more
  • Slow down!
  • Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe

Thursday Thoughts

I think Thursday is becoming my catch-up day. It's really the Monday of my week because I don't have Sunny for the next four days so I race around trying to get a lot accomplished in between sitting and trying to catch up on my x-stitching, bill paying, reading, etc. I seriously don't know (or remember) how I did it when I had four kids the ages of 0-5 years at home. I'm deciding I must have been Superwoman! ha ha

Weather: As you know I'm a self-proclaimed weather wonk. I love anything having to do with the weather. My weather. Your weather. Europe's weather... you get the picture. After our record-breaking high of 111 degrees the other day, the meteorologists were promising cooler temps and RAIN! Oh yeah. Well, it cooled off some but the humidity is through the roof. And we didn't get one drop of rain at our house. It all went to the east side of town. Today is the first full day of Fall and I'm longing for some fall weather. Which in Phoenix means highs in the 90s and lows in the 70s. The only thing changing colors here is the grass. It's turning brown.

Sunny: Grammy Daycare with Sunny is going great if I do say so myself. I just love having her here. She's just a sponge soaking up experiences, information, skills. She provides never-ending entertainment for me. Yesterday she had attitude. This was a first for her and me although Katie's mentioned her attitude from time to time. I don't know what her problem was but she was frustrated with everything. The dogs. Me. Herself. It was hard for me to hide my smiles and laughter because I don't want her to think attitude is acceptable. But it's just so darn funny! I need to take some pictures of her next week. I'm behind on that.

Personal Responsibility: Go ahead. Those of you that know me. Roll your eyes. I know what you're thinking, "Here we go. She's on her soapbox again!" You're right. I am. But I'm really preaching to myself. It is just so easy to blame our character flaws, bad choices, wrong behavior, and whiny attitudes on others. It's even easier these days. In fact, it's the status quo. Just look at the example set by our elected officials. I was convicted this week of my judgmental attitude. I heard a story about a person with a really tough choice to make. She chose a solution that I disapproved of. My first reaction was one of shock and disappointment. Then I immediately was ashamed. Who am I to judge her? She's an adult. She knows her family situation. I also know she's not a believer, so wouldn't it be better for me to be praying for her than to be judging her? (She's not someone I have contact with, so I can't actively witness to her at this time). I ended up more appalled at myself than I was at her. Which is how God intended it. I'm not responsible for anyone else's actions. I am only responsible for me. And obviously, not doing a good job at being responsible for me. It really bugs me that now that the kids are gone, I have more time to see myself. I'm not sure I always like what I see!

Winner: I'm a winner! I was so surprised last night when I checked out Grammy Girlfriend to find that I am a winner in her latest giveaway. I never win anything, so this was a thrill! Teresa has two blogs, her personal one and a holiday blog. Her holiday blog is focusing more on Christmas now and I can't wait to see her Christmas tree designs. I know I'll be inspired. Thanks for picking me, Teresa!

Exercise: If you've been reading my blog for long, you know I keep trying different exercise options. It's not that I don't like to exercise, it's more that I'm clumsy and usually end up injuring some part of me that takes forever to heal. For example, I got a groin pull last February and I still can't put on socks or lace up shoes on my right foot without help. I can't bend and twist that leg at the same time. I asked my Dr. about it and she said groin pulls take forever to heal. She offered to send me to PT, but really, it's been this long already, I might as well tough it out on my own. Anyway... I've decided that walking is my best bet. I dug out my pedometer and am working toward 10,000 steps each day. Some days I make it. Some days I don't. 2,000 steps is approximately one mile. I always walk a minimum of three miles (6,000 steps) each day. I always feel so much better when I'm walking daily. And I don't injure myself!

As always, thanks for listening (really reading). Enjoy the day...

111 degrees?! On September 19th?! Where is Fall?

Oh my goodness. We broke a record yesterday for the latest 110 degree or above daily high temperature. It was 111 degrees! The average high is down to 98 degrees. I long to be average.

319 Pairs of Flip-Flops Are on the Way to Haiti Orphanage!

Thanks to all of you our flip-flop drive was a resounding success! On May 25, 2010 I announced that my friends Beth and Nancy and I were holding a flip-flop drive to celebrate our 54th birthdays. The drive was to support the God's Littlest Angels Orphanage in Haiti. Our goal was 54 pairs of flip-flops each for a grand total of 164 pairs.

Your response blew our socks off! We collected 319 pairs of flip-flops in all sizes, colors, patterns and $50 in postage donations. This translates to eight boxes filled with flip-flops. Thank you does not seem enough to say to describe our gratefulness for your generosity.

Keep watching this blog for another giving opportunity in January 2011. And again, thank you for making our birthdays so memorable!

Thursday Thoughts

Hallelujah! The average high temperature in my area finally dropped to 99 degrees. Of course, that really doesn't mean anything as the forecast high for today is 107 degrees. But we can hope. Fall starts next Wednesday, so the temps should be dropping to around 100 degrees in the next few weeks. The monsoon appears to be over which means no rain (of significance) until January. Unless a hurricane decides to hit Mexico just right and we get the moisture from that.

Projects. I am inundated with half-finished and un-started projects. My third bedroom is absolutely a disaster. It looks like something from the TV show "Clean Sweep". It currently holds the pack & play, a small dresser for baby items, a small side table, and craft tables. I put the craft tables up hoping I would be able to complete some projects. Instead, they are covered with craft supplies making it impossible for me to have work space to actually work on the project. I'm a mess!

JD. Can I just be maudlin for a moment and tell you how much I miss JD & Janel? My dream situation would be for all of my kids to live no more than 12 hours driving time from us. That would make it easy for visits. Don't get me wrong, I love being able to talk to them whenever, for free, on the cell phone. But it's not the same. And we've only been face-to-face with Janel four or five times. She and I have a lot in common and I'm hoping the day will come when we can spend more time together. Ah well, maudlin moment is over, thanks for listening.

Sam's Club. First off, let me say, we are so thankful for the Sam's Club job. We need prayer for wisdom however. Dan's appraisal appointments are picking up (Praise God!). Last month he had 20 orders. It's really difficult to work that many orders and work full-time at Sam's. We need prayer that we will know when to make the decision for him to go part-time at Sam's. He can't quit until after we buy a house, hopefully sometime in 2011. He can cut his hours and keep his insurance. Obviously he makes way more at appraisals than he does at Sam's, so less hours at Sam's means more hours for appraisals... IF the orders keep up. Your prayer support is appreciated, thank you.

I get my new glasses today! I'll take pictures so you can see them... enjoy your day!

Post Secret

Jessica introduced me to this blog. It's people who send in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard. The blog is updated every Sunday. It is funny, sad, beautiful, ugly, and a terrific snapshot of who we are, what our secrets are, and why we keep our secrets. I guess I kind of looked at Post Secret as a community service, a safe place to say whatever you need to say. When you read some of the secrets I think you'll know what I mean...

My Blog List is Growing

I'm always on the lookout for x-stitching and Christmas blogs. Last week I found some really cool ones and added them to my blog, blog, blog list (I need to change the name of that, just haven't come up with a really good one yet).

It's hard to find a themed blog by using a search engine, at least in my opinion. So when I find a good stitching blog I click through the writer's blog list to hopefully find more. It occurred to me that there may be people looking at my blog who like to x-stitch and I should provide the links to some great blogs. Same goes with Christmas. I'm amazed at how many people out there look forward to Christmas like I do. I'm pretty much the black sheep in my family, so it makes me feel good to find I'm not alone!

Anyway, whether you enjoy Christmas and/or x-stitching, I invite you to look at these blogs. This first one has a great Halloween design. Keeping with that old-fashioned theme, the next one focuses on Christmas. They are beautifully designed. Which once again leads me to wonder, did they do this themselves? Did they pay someone to do it? How can I design a beautiful blog like this?

There's several other cool blogs I added to my list and I invite you to check them out. Do you have any favorites that you'd like to recommend? I'm always ready to be inspired by the creativity of others...

Terrific New Website... Check It Out!

I have posted before about my friend Joanna. She is a photographer and her work is fantastic. To see some of the four generation photos she took of my family look at my post of July 9, 2010. Joanna launched her new website this week. Be sure to check it out, and when you do have your speakers on.

It's a fun site to visit. She has a great eye and I love the way she describes her product as "modern and whimsical". That says it so much better than my layman's description of "she takes the pictures that are in-between the posed shots." I adored the four generation photos she took for us and now have plans to book her for our 30th anniversary photos, photos of my daughters and I, and photos of our whole family the next time we're all home together. However, my bookings are certainly not enough to provide her with a steady  income. That's where you all come in. If you live in the Phoenix area and you want quality photos of your family contact Joanna. And be sure to tell her Vicki sent you!

Remembering

Tuesday, September 11, 2001

My 6:00 am alarm went off at 5:53 am as usual. I always set my bedside clock five - seven minutes ahead so I won't be late. The radio was set to KTAR as usual because I was and am a total news junkie. It was a few minutes before the top-of-the-hour newscast and Ned Foster was discussing a small plane that had hit the World Trade Center in New York City. Never one to pass up an exciting story, I clicked on the bedroom TV to MNSBC (this was before they proclaimed their liberal agenda).

Sure enough, there it was, smoke pouring from the upper floors of one of the towers. I woke up Dan and we started debating if this was a small plane, a large plane, deliberate, an accident? Then, I watched in horror as another plane veered into the shot and into the other tower. The explosion was immediate. Fire. Bright reds, oranges, and yellows. Thick black smoke. It looked like a fireworks display had detonated out the sides of the building. I said, "whoa, that wasn't a small plane, that was a commercial jet." Our debate over the first strike was resolved in a few seconds. Large plane. Deliberate.

The thought "we're under attack" was immediate and real as well as unbelievable and surreal. My first thoughts went to my daughter Jessica who was away at her first year at UofA in Tucson. "What does a war in the United States look like?" "Are we safe?" "How will I get my daughter home?" "Do I go to work today?" My thoughts quickly turned to my friend whose husband was out of town. He works in law enforcement and was on an undercover assignment. I figured he would be called back to his home office. I called her, woke her up and told her to turn on the TV.

The extraordinary thing about that moment is that life went on as usual in my house. I got the kids up. I had every TV in the house turned to the cable news channels, but that wasn't that unusual for me. I explained what had happened and assured them that "yes, they still had to go to school". I got ready for work. The only unusual event was that I grabbed my camping TV to take to work with me so I could stay up to date. By the time I got everyone to school the Pentagon had been hit. Flight 93 was missing. I was sort of in shock and sort of thinking this was a dream and sort of convinced this was really bad. The worst event, the worst disaster to occur in my life up to that moment.

At work I plugged in my little black and white and watched the drama, the horror continue to unfold. The replaying of the jumpers. The replaying of each tower collapse. The replaying of the Pentagon in flames. The replaying of a black scar on the earth in Pennsylvania. I kept track of the President's whereabouts. The Vice-President's whereabouts. The Secretary of State's whereabouts. I watched the celebrations in Palestine. I watched the weeping in the United States. I was exhausted by the end of that work day. I doubt I got any work accomplished.

Driving home, the tone of the newscasters on the radio had switched from shock to indignation that we would be considered vulnerable to defiance that we could be defeated. The name Osama Bin Laden was already being bandied about as the mastermind to this event.

That night at dinner we discussed the attacks. Talked about what the next few days might bring. Explained that the country was at war, declared or not. We watched the President address the nation and then I settled down to watch the human interest stories already being aired on MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News. I cried as I watched the pictures of the missing go up on fences, walls, lamp posts, and buildings around New York City. I cried at the look of shock, despair and horror on the faces of the family members.

I watched far too late into the night and then reluctantly went to bed to try to sleep for a few hours.

On Wednesday, September 12, 2001 I awoke to the sound of my 6:00 am alarm going off at 5:53 am. I heard the voice of Ned Foster on KTAR talking about the overnight developments. I set about my day in the new normal of life in the United States of America. The post-9/11 life that continues today.

Labeling

So, I've noticed on other people's really cool blogs that they have labels. I had no idea how they did that until one day I saw the "labels" widget. I decided to apply it to my recipe blog where it really made sense to use it. I didn't like the way it looked though. It was just a list of labels. Not the cool looking thing I saw on everyone else's blog.

Yesterday I decided to explore the labels widget a little more and figured out that I was looking for a "cloud" not a "list". So I chose that option. Way cool. Then of course I wanted my everyday blog to look as cool as my recipe blog so for the past two days I've been labeling every single post on this blog. That was way more time consuming that I realized it would be. But doesn't my label cloud look cool?

The only problem with this whole labeling thing is that I (and everyone else in the world) can now see what I focus on when I write. Clearly I'm most interested in holidays, Christmas and Sunny. Not that those are bad things. But I do feel a little embarrassed that I haven't devoted more attention to Dan, faith, or any of my kids.

Now if I could just figure out that whole "grab my button" thing...

Nap Time

Sunny has been in our family now for 15 months. You would think that everyone would be used to having her around.

This is not the case.

Our dogs simply cannot relax when she is in our home.

Except for Daisy. She's old and can sleep regardless of what's going on. But even she is on high alert when there's a toddler in the house.

This is what it looks like around my house after Sunny goes home.

It's nap time...

Labor Day

Katie had a "girls day" at her house yesterday. Jessica, my mom, my sister-in-law Kelly, Katie and Sunny made up the guest list. We sat around and chatted. We watched Sunny play. We ate a delicious lunch. We relaxed. We enjoyed each other's company. What a great day. Thank you Katie!

Birthday Photos

No, I did not bake the cake. Sam's Club did. They have absolutely the best cakes ever. Jessica's favorite color is yellow and you'll just have to take my word for it, the cake looked better in person than it does on film.

Adam had to work last night, so Jessica came over to have a birthday dinner with us. We waited until Adam got off work to open the presents and eat the cake. Here we all are...

Happy Birthday, Jessica!

Jessica & Vicki 2/2010

Yikes! My first baby is turning 27 years old today. Where did the time go?

Jessica's due date was October 8, 1983. In the few days before her actual birth date, I developed toxemia and had to quit work six weeks earlier than expected. I did not have paid disability leave, so we were a little anxious about how we could survive with me being off work potentially for 12 weeks without pay.

On the morning of the day she was born, Dan had an early morning meeting (or shift, I can't remember which) at Jack in the Box where he worked. I hadn't slept well the night before, laying awake worrying (have I ever mentioned that worrying is one of my special gifts?!) As I lay flat on my bed with my feet up on the wall over my pillow, I talked to the baby. "OK, baby, you need to come very soon." This is absolutely the truth and I just kept explaining out loud to the baby the situation, our concerns, and how I really needed her to come a little early.

When Dan got home, we went and walked around Bruner's furniture store, and then later that afternoon headed over to my folks house to swim. It was early September in Phoenix. It was hot. The pool was cool. I felt weightless in it. Enough said. As I was putting on my swimsuit I decided to use the restroom before getting into the water. I will try to tell this next part without divulging too much information. As I finished and prepared to leave the room, I realized my water had broken.

I walked outside where everyone was in the pool and announced that my water broke. Controlled panic ensued. I called my Dr. who told me to meet him at St Joe's.

My controlled panic became out-of-control panic.

St Joe's at that time had a terrible reputation as the hospital with the most patients developing staph infections. I was scheduled to have the baby at Phoenix Baptist, but because she was so early, I had to switch to St. Joe's.

I was not going there alone!

We went home where I did a load of laundry, shaved my legs, and waited for my best friend Jeri to get back from shopping with her daughter. I knew Dan would have to fill out all the paperwork (I was pre-registered at Phx. Baptist) and did not want to be alone while he was doing that. Jeri finally showed up and we were off to St. Joe's.

When we got there, the admitting clerk, upon hearing my name, said "oh good, we were wondering where you were. Your Dr's been here for two hours."

Well gee, he didn't tell me to hurry to the hospital!

All this time I was dripping away, but absolutely no labor pains. By the time they got me all situated, I'd lost so much water that you could see the outline of the baby when I laid down. (Sounds bizarre, but true) They did another ultrasound. I was hoping they would tell me if she was a boy or girl (we still didn't know), but they couldn't or wouldn't see. She was breech with her arms above her head stuck up under my ribs.

So, I had to have a C-section. Unfortunately, the C-section class in our birthing classes was scheduled for that next Thursday night. I had no idea what was happening. Because I dilly-dallied so long in getting to the hospital, all the ORs were busy and we had to wait until 10:00 pm to get one.

Since I didn't know what to expect, I panicked when they started tugging the baby out. The last thing I remember before the anesthesiologist knocked me out was the OB saying, "Vicki, your daughter just peed on me!" (By the way, we attended the next Birthing Class with Jessica in our arms!)

Jessica Lynn Koons, born five weeks early. She weighed over 6 lbs. and was 19 inches long. She was born with a broken arm. It broke when he was trying to pull her out because she was wedged so tightly under my ribs.

She was beautiful! She rarely cried. She had the sweetest personality. We were both wrapped around her little finger.

Today Jessica is an accomplished, brilliant, talented, motivated, kind, compassionate, creative woman. She is a typical first born in that she approaches everything she does with the intent of doing it to the best of her ability. We are so proud of her. We marvel at all she's already accomplished and at all she intends to accomplish in her life. Happy Birthday, Jess... we love you so!

A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words...

...but you're going to have to wait until Halloween for the picture.

Costco and Sam's Club have the cutest Halloween costumes for kids. Dan and I (really, it's all Dan) have been looking at them for Sunny. At Costco this weekend we spotted the cutest cow and ladybug costumes. I asked Katie if Dan could buy Sunny one. Katie said the cow was 1st choice and the ladybug 2nd choice. So we bought the cow.

Yesterday, Katie was running late so I couldn't give her the cow costume. Later she texted me and asked me to dress Sunny in it and send her a text photo. So I did. As soon as I picked up the costume Sunny's face lit up and she started "mooing" (one of the sounds we worked on in August). I dressed her in it and just let me say, you've never seen anything so precious! I took her into the bathroom so she could see herself in the mirror where more "mooing" ensued. It was so cute and funny.

Trust me, when the pictures get posted at Halloween, they'll be worth the wait...

By the way, Christmas Corner was updated today.
